The prostate is a small gland in the male reproductive system. With advancing age, many men experience a decline in prostate health, which can range from an enlarged prostate to more serious conditions such as prostate cancer.

Natural remedies along with attention to diet and lifestyle can play an important role in prostate health.

The prostate is a walnut size gland in men, located just below the bladder. It is vital to maintain a healthy prostate as changes in prostate size can affect urinary and sexual functions.

The main function of the prostate is to produce a thick white fluid that creates semen when mixed with the sperm produced by the testicles.

Prostate Enlargement

More than 1 in 3 of all men over 50 will have some symptoms of prostate enlargement.

It’s not known why the prostate gets bigger as you get older, but it is not caused by cancer and does not increase your risk of developing prostate cancer.

Signs of an enlarged prostate can include:

  • difficulty starting or stopping urinating
  • a weak flow of urine
  • straining when peeing
  • feeling like you’re not able to fully empty your bladder
  • prolonged dribbling after you’ve finished peeing
  • needing to pee more frequently or more suddenly
  • waking up frequently during the night to pee

If you experience any of the above speak to your GP for advice.

Prostatitis

Unlike prostate enlargement or prostate cancer – which usually affects older men – prostatitis can develop in men of all ages.

Prostatitis is a painful condition in which the prostate is inflamed, swollen, and tender. It can be caused by a bacterial infection or just simply be inflamed.

Symptoms:

  • Pain in the perineum (the area between the rectum and the testicles)
  • Pain on defecation
  • Aches and pains in the joints or muscles and the lower back
  • Blood in the urine
  • Pain or burning during urination
  • Painful ejaculation

Prostate cancer

In the UK, prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer in men, with more than 45,000 new cases diagnosed every year.

Early prostate cancer does not usually cause any symptoms.

If the cancer has grown large enough to put pressure on your urethra, the symptoms of prostate cancer can be difficult to distinguish from those of prostate enlargement. They may include:

  • needing to pee more frequently, often during the night
  • needing to rush to the toilet
  • difficulty in starting to pee (hesitancy)
  • straining or taking a long time while peeing
  • weak flow
  • feeling that your bladder has not fully emptied
  • blood in urine or blood in semen

You should see your GP if you have these symptoms. It’s much more likely to be prostate enlargement, but it’s important to rule out cancer.

Food

Key nutrients support the prostate. A wholefood and plant-based diet can help to reduce inflammation and maintain prostate health.

  • Tomatoes

Rich in the nutrient lycopene, which has been shown to slow down prostate enlargement. Other lycopene-rich foods include watermelon, pink grapefruit, guava and papaya.

Lycopene is released in greater quantities in cooked tomatoes.

Recipe

Birch leaf and Nettle Root Tincture

This tincture addresses urinary dysfunctions, water congestion, fluid retention and uric acid accumulation. It relieves the body of metabolic waste, enhances urine flow, invigorates the urinary bladder, and strengthens the urinary tract. However, care must be taken not to use it without the supervision of a medical professional if you have stones in the urinary tract.

Ingredients

  • 25g Nettle Root
  • 15g Birch Leaves
  • 25g Pellitory-of-the-wall (Parietaria officinalis)
  • 20g White Poplar, or Birch Bark (Populus tremuloides)
  • 400ml Good-quality Vodka

Method

  1. Ensure that all the dried ingredients are finely chopped, but not powdered.
  2. Place all the ingredients except for the vodka in a large glass jar with a secure fitting lid. Pour in the vodka, close the lid tightly, and shake a few times.
  3. Label the jar with all the ingredients and the date. Place the jar in a dark cupboard and shake it at least once a day for 3 weeks.
  4. Strain the contents of the jar through a muslin bag into a measuring jug and pour the tincture into an appropriately sized (350-400ml) sterilized amber glass bottle. Seal the bottle.
  5. Label with all the ingredients and the original starting date. Start by taking a few drops each day and build up to 1 teaspoon 2-3 times a day. Use within 6 months.

Note: Consult your doctor if your symptoms are severe or if they worsen. This tincture is NOT suitable for use during pregnancy.
